The Case against Internet, that is an open interconnection of all systyems via an IP over the emerging IoT (Internet of Things) is a case of Risk.
Just 2 decades ago, internet browsing allowed consumers and marketeers, thousands miles away in geography, to meet and exchange anything of value.
The business benefits were obvious. Millions were made in a day just in this B2C, C2C or B2B online relationships, based on marginal profit and economies of scale. The internet came along with hacking, identidy theft, child porn, corporate espionage, illegal drugs, guns, cybercrime and ultimately cyberwarfare, where nations or dark interests destroy the physical infrastructure of each other to declare their win of the day while preparing next days battlefield to engage with the hope of dominance.
All this happens over WWW were copper wire has blended with 4G mobile networks and fiber optics carry the bits as both business deals and harpoon attacks.
The question which this generation will have to answer to the next one is:
“The mix of business, cyberwarfare and individual risk that coexist online, comprise an effective and efficient use of the internet and the massive budgets which are spent to maintain it and develop it to each successive digital industry revision?”
The numbers maybe difficult to fetch, yet the case maybe that the Internet from a citizens’ point of view has ceased to be to the citizens’ benefit.
And if that is the case, UN and UNSC will have to re-address the issue of the online shared community vis-a-vis the amassing risks involved, given the fact that budgets are not limited.
Maybe the budget for ecology could benefit on much wider scale if the global cyberwar budget was transferred to more effective uses for The Planet and The People.
